We are working to ensure that children on the Isle of Wight are supported to get the best start in life that will lead to good health and wellbeing. This will provide the foundation to ensure they are able to achieve the best opportunities and keep as healthy and well as possible throughout their lives.
We want to ensure that families, individuals and communities are thriving and resilient with access to good jobs, affordable housing, leisure activities, lifelong training, education and learning, health and care services are are able to enjoy the place in which they live.
We want to ensure that people on the Isle of Wight are able to live independently in their own homes with appropriate care support. We want to make sure older residents are supported to play an active role in their communities and supported to maintain and develop their social and community networks.
Mrs C, an elderly lady living alone, lacked the confidence to go into town on her own, forcing a situation of dependency, isolation and depression.
Her fear of managing on her own, in particular walking up to the shops, coupled with financial constraints, meant she leant heavily on charity volunteers for support. Such reliance was unsustainable and put heavy pressures on the charity, while at the same time compounding her feelings of isolation and depression.
What was put in place to help:
The Local Area Co-ordinator identified the pressures being put on both parties and organised a 2 hour care call with Social Services to escort her on a walk to the shops. This proved to be successful and has since been followed up with a place on a regular free bus service.
How things are working now:
She quickly grew in confidence to the point where she was able to make her own way to the shops. She is now more socially active, happier and more independent.
